Despite the buzz, exactly what the metaverse is, is not always clear.

                Micromobility, the use of bicycles, e-scooters, mopeds, e-bikes and other smaller transportation vehicles, has bloomed in the past five years and despite a decrease in ridership due to COVID19, the industry is expected to make a full recovery and grow even more. It is almost impossible to venture out into urban environments and not encounter people using e-scooters or electric bikes or see e-scooters perched on the sidewalk in a row until someone uses them. Aside from individual ownership, shared micromobility services, supported by transportation companies such as Uber, Lime, Byrd, and Lyft, make micromobility vehicles accessible to all with a phone and use of QR code. As with many other industries, the Internet of Things is able to transform this sphere. A report by Ericsson predicts that the micro-mobility market could be worth 12 billion by $2027 compared to its current valuation at $3.5 billion. The demand for bikes in the United States is also on the rise

                The Internet of Things (IoT), particularly through deployment of sensor technology, can provide a unique advantage to coastal zone management as coastal erosion and sea level rise are threatening coastal communities worldwide. The United States Coastline is home to up to 40% of the population, following major increases in population rise from the 1960s to now.  Many major cities are located on the coasts, and consequently, millions of homes are  threatened by climate change and sea level rise which has contributed to increased storm intensity and frequency. Internet of Things devices and sensors allow for increased monitoring and data analysis, which, applied to coastal management situations, facilitate data driven adaptation and changes in environmental planning and management.

    IoT Adoption and the need for advanced skills

               While the Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications are enjoying an almost universal uptake, a key consideration ­ — workforce and training and the skills gap merits some examination. With a relatively new, complex, and rapidly growing field like IoT, new skills are needed to support it and its implementation as new challenges and needs arise. IoT requires highly skilled individuals to fill gaps in fields like engineering, data science and management, cybersecurity and risk specialists, technical management of the devices themselves, manufacturing, and more. The challenge comes when the skills and expertise of the current workforce both within and outside of a company may fall behind what is actually needed.

    Of all the various applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), the transformative potential for IIoT is particularly compelling. A 2021 report by Grant View Research valued the IIoT market at 216 billion dollars in 2020 with a projected compound growth rate of 26.8% from 2021 to 2028. However, implementation of IIoT is not a straight shot path, and there exist are several barriers to consider. For example, nearly 74% of organizations surveyed by Cisco in 2017 reported failure of IIoT implementation; a more recent report in 2021 by Microsoft revealed that around 35% of IoT in business applications fail in proof of concept stage. Several critical factors impact IIoT implementation, these include: cybersecurity concerns, connectivity/interoperability, and unanticipated implementation costs.

    WiFi 6 (originally, 802.11ax) is the next generation of WiFi, following WiFi 5 (previously 802.11ac), and its previous iterations. With the new standard comes an increase in theoretical maximum speeds, from 3.5 gigabits per second to 9.6 gigabits per second. WiFi, a wireless networking technology, is based on a set of standards created and maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802), and “Wi‑Fi” is a trademark of the non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance.
